ECOLOGICAL FEATURES:

Climate: Similar to Luanda. Average annual temperature of 24.4ºc, with maximum of 27.5ºc in March and minimum of 20.2ºc in July. The average relative air humidity is 80%. Average annual percipitation is about 450mm

Habitat Types and Vegetation: The project area is part of the arid coastal belt (up to 200m in altitude), with soils of coastal sediments. It contains four major littoral habitat types: mangroves, in the floodplains along the river bank; dry grassland savannah (mainly Graminae); a mosaic of grassland and dispersed deciduous and semi-deciduous trees; and stands of palm trees (Palmae).

Fauna: The inventory of animal species found in the project area was never studied. It hosts a large variety of invertebrates, fish, amphibians, reptiles and birds, yet to be studied and recorded. It is expected that the species that are associated with the mangrove habitat (see below) will be found in this area as well. It may also be home to many of the mammal species that are found in the Cuanza River and in Quiçama National Park. Some of the mammal species expected to be found in the project area are: blue guenon (Cercopithecus mitis), talapoin (Miopithecus talapoin), African manatee (Trichechus senegalensis), bushbuck (Tragelaphus scriptus), duikers (Sylvicapra grimmia and other species), ardvark (Orycteropus afer), porcupine (Hystrix africaeaustralis), civet (Civettictis civetta), Angolan genet (Genetta angolensis), spotted hyaena (Crocuta crocuta), wild cat (Felis lybica) and others.
