Angola has a wide variety of eco-systems, including a variety of wetlands.
One of the most unique and fragile wetland communities in Angola is that of the
mangroves. The most prominents mangrove communities in Angola occur at the wide
floodplains at the mouths of the Chiloango, the Zaire, the Loge and the Cuanza
Rivers. The dominant tree species are mainly of the genus Rhizophora. The
mangrove creates unique habitats and host some of the rarest species of fish,
birds and mammals. Among the mammals there are some rare species of primates
such as the blue guenon (Cercopithecus mitis), the talapoin (Miopithecus
talapoin), the Bosman´s potto (Perodicticus potto) and bush babies (Galago
spp.). On the lower courses of these rivers the African manatee (Trichechus
senegalensis) may be found, as well as the soft skinned turtle (Trionyx
triunguis).
